Monty
Smith
Warm
greetings -
I'm looking
forward to
sharing ministry
with the Browns
Point Community.
I grew up in
Spokane. There I
attended
Gonzaga
for both
undergraduate
and Law School.
My two teenagers
Isaac and Hannah
(sophomore and
freshman at
Stadium High
school) and my
sister and
family who live
in New Jersey
are my
closest family.
Prior to United Methodist ministry I served in the U. S. Army, worked as a
poverty and
Civil Rights
lawyer, worked
with an
Ashram
project in North
India and Crestone,
Colorado, and as
a prayer
counselor at
Silent Unity.
During Seminary
at
St. Paul
School of
Theology in
Kansas City I
served
Hamilton
Chapel UMC, an
African American
congregation in
Parsons, Kansas.
There we rebuilt
part of the
church and
helped elect the
first black
member to the
city council.
Then for two
years I served
as the associate
pastor at
First UMC in Topeka. I
was involved
with
congregational
care, a Habitat
For Humanity
project and
peace and
justice
projects. Moving
back to
Washington I
served the
churches in
Willipa,
Raymond, South
Bend and Bay
Center before
coming to
Tacoma
First Church.
In late July my kids and I will attend a family camp in Colorado, a
favorite outing
along with
skiing/snow
boarding and
swimming. Both
kids play
musical
instruments and
are involved in
school bands but
I am a
non-literate
lover of music.
For me ministry
is a way of life
and an outlet
for my love of
service and
justice. I am
interested in
all faith
traditions and
many expressions
of loving and
worshipping God.
In 2001 I earned
a Coaching
certificate from
the
Academy for
Coach Training
and continue an
interest in
human and
organizational
development. We
live in North
Tacoma, and
having just
invested in a Prius, I get 60
miles
to the gallon
roundtrip to
BPUMC - this I
love - and look
forward to my
years at
Browns Point.
